Can you imagine making a gallon of juice with just two oranges? Not sure something like that is even possible? Well, I’m here to prove that it is possible, and it also tastes wonderful. This frugal wonder orange juice has a strong and refreshing orange flavor and is perfect for making punch or cocktails.
I remember the times when my brother and I were kids and our Mom would make a large batch of orange juice for our birthday parties. I didn’t realize back then that she would use just two or three oranges to make that much juice. I know now that we didn’t have much money to organize big birthday parties. But she would always make a cake and orange juice, and she would make us mini pizzas and pop some popcorn. And we would invite a dozen of our friends and celebrate our birthdays.
For me, that was (and still IS!) a PERFECT BIRTHDAY PARTY that I could imagine.
I remember thinking that none of the other kids had a party like that. All their moms served us was chips and coke, and the cake of course. But I knew that our Mom made all, and that was what I really loved, and I still love, about her.
Fast forward till today, when I’m thirty-something years old and married, I still make those kinds of birthday parties for my brother and husband, and myself. I make some cake, pop some popcorn, make mini pizzas and make my Mom’s frugal wonder orange juice. And I plan to keep on doing that for my children one day hopefully 🙂
So, you must be asking “how in the world can she make that much juice with just two oranges?”, and I’ll tell you that the secret is in the orange skin!
The orange skin is full of fragrant essential oils that will give the juice the strong orange flavor. So, we are going to use the whole oranges to make this wonder orange juice, and not just squeezing the juice out of the oranges and diluting it with water. The only problem would be the white part that can be very bitter.
To reduce the bitterness, first, you will need to submerge the oranges in boiling water and then to put them in the freezer for a couple of hours. I honestly have no idea why this helps, but trust me, I’ve tested this recipe by following and not following these steps. And when I didn’t follow the steps, the juice had a bit of tartness to the taste. If you do know why this is the case, please let me know in the comments below.
When you take the oranges out of the freezer, cut them into chunks and blend with few cups of water, until smooth. Then mix with the rest of the water, lemon juice and sugar (if you want a sweeter taste). I like adding the lemon juice as an acidity regulator so that the juice can be kept a few days longer.
Stir the juice a few times to help dissolve all the sugar, and let it sit for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then strain the juice and serve.
Pro tip – don’t throw away the leftover orange bits after straining the juice. You can use it to make a lovely orange marmalade! 😉 Just add it to the saucepan with sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cook until you get desired thickness (10-15 minutes for two oranges). You can also use them for cakes and pies.
I call it wonder orange juice because it really is strange how you can get a lot of flavorful juice with just a few oranges. That really makes it a frugal recipe, and I love it! You can use it in cocktails or for making punch. But it’s also perfect for drinking as is since it’s very refreshing and rich in flavor.
I hope you will enjoy it as much as we all do!
