For me, chocolate is the ULTIMATE treat, and it has to be at least with 70% cocoa. That is why I want to share this recipe for chocolate crackle cookies, which are so rich in chocolate flavor and very addictive. I always use raw cocoa powder, which gives that rich chocolate taste and fills the house with a wonderful cocoa smell.

Despite the richness of the cocoa, these chocolate crackle cookies are very light and very very easy to make. So make sure to always have ingredients for them, because you’ll want to (have to) make them every day.

Even though these are the cookies you would make around Chrismas holidays, I find that they are perfect for any time of the year, especially when you miss Christmas and want just a small bite of it.

The secret to very crisp and white powdered sugar layer is to coat your cookies very well when rolling them. Coat them with a very thick layer of powdered sugar, so it starts to fall off when putting them on the cookies sheet.

Don’t wait! Go to the kitchen and make your chocolate crackle cookies! You know you want to.

Ingredients

  • 1 stick of unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup raw cocoa powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar

Directions

  1. Cream together unsalted butter and granulated sugar. Mix in eggs, one by one, and vanilla extract, until well combined.
  2. Add salt, baking powder, cocoa powder, and flour, and mix everything until well combined.
  3. Cover the dough in the bowl with plastic wrap and put in the refrigerator to rest at least 2 hours.
  4. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Take the dough out of the fridge. Use a tablespoon as a measurement for the size of the cookies. Take 1 Tbsp of the dough, roll it between your hands to form a ball, then roll it into the powdered sugar, and place on baking sheet. No need to press it down. Continue the process with rest of the dough.
  6. Bake the cookies in preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, until they are set and crackled.
  7. Transfer them to a cooling rack, and let them cool down completely before serving. Enjoy!

These did not turn out even close to how they should have. They're dry and never flattened out as crackle/crinkle cookies should.

I’ve made these cookies twice with rave reviews. They are very easy to make and taste fantastic! A tip: I discovered that placing a few balls in a bowl of confectioners sugar and swirling the bowl rather than each ball serves to coat the cookie balls thoroughly. The cookies then look like the picture when done. Thank you for this delicious recipe.

While mine are delicious, they turned out dense and dry. They did not flatten much and just barely crackled. I will try again, but I will reduce the flour slightly to see if that helps.

Wish I would’ve read the reviews beforehand! Had the same problem as above where they were really dry and didn’t flatten at all. Tried to flatten them a bit with a spatula halfway through the bake and they all just crumbled. Just threw them all in the garbage :(
