Popcorn is my favorite salty crunchy snack, not only because they are cheap, but also because they are healthy (at least, healthier than crisps) and I can flavor them with a great variety of ways. I know there are a lot of people who only make microwave popcorn because they don’t know how to make them on the stove top. That is why I am sharing this simple tutorial for making your own basic stovetop popcorn. And when you make them you can flavor them any way you like, or eat them plain. It’s your choice! ♡

To be honest with you, I’ve tried microwave popcorn a few times and every time something was missing. The flavor tends to be mild and they are not crunchy enough as they get when you make them on the stove top. Also, microwave popcorn is full of additives which make them really unhealthy, and that is what we all are trying to avoid.
On the other hand, the old-fashioned popcorn, made on the stove top, is a much healthier version, especially if you air-pop them. They contain none of the additives, you can make any quantity that you want, and flavor them any way you like. The possibilities are endless. So, what’s there not to love?
Air-popped and plain popcorns are healthy whole-grain and gluten-free snack that is really low in calories (amazing 30 kcal per cup) and high in fiber (around 1 g per cup). And if you prefer to air-pop the kernels you will need the hot air popper. You can get it on Amazon for a very cheap price. But I like minimalism, and I don’t need another kitchen gadget to take the precious space in my tiny kitchen. That is why I prefer my basic stovetop popcorn.

Making basic stovetop popcorn is fast cheap and way more flavorful than the store-bought pre-popped or microwave stuff. All you need is a pot with a lid, a little bit of oil and popcorn kernels. And after about 5 minutes you can have a whole bucket full of popcorn. The quantity depends on the size of the pot! Isn’t that great? 😀
My favorite topping is just a little bit of Himalayan salt, but you can also add freshly ground black pepper or even sprinkle a little bit of grated Parmesan cheese. YUM! Here is another favorite –> MELTED BUTTER! OMG, don’t let me start on this indulging version of popcorn! They are way waaay better than the microwave stuff. You can also try other seasonings of your choice or even the sweet toppings, like melted chocolate (YASSS!).

Basic Stovetop Popcorn are really EASY to make, cheap and healthy crunchy snack. All you need is a pot with a lid, a little bit of oil and popcorn kernels.
1 minPrep Time
4 minCook Time
5 minTotal Time
Ingredients
- Popcorn kernels*
- Vegetable oil or butter
- Sea Salt (or other topping of your choice)
Directions
- Take big pot with the lid and add enough oil just to cover the bottom**. You can also use butter. Cut it into little pieces and add to the pot.
- Add the popcorn kernels in one layer. Be careful not to overcrowd the kernels, or you will end up with burnt popcorn.
- Cover the pot with the lid and put over high heat. As soon as the kernels start to pop you will need to start to shake the pot, to prevent burning. Shake well every few seconds. When the popping slows to a few seconds between the pops (or there are no pops anymore), remove the pot from the stove, and take the lid off to allow excess steam to escape.
- Put the popcorn in the serving bowl and season with salt (or any other topping you like). Enjoy!
Notes
*Make sure you store your popcorn kernels in an air-tight container, so they don’t get stale. **If you’re not using enough oil that can stunt or prevent the explosion of the kernels. This way you end up with small dense and burnt popcorn.
